Our junior research group investigates reasons for unequal gender participation in European Social Fund (ESF) funding projects in Saxony. The intended gender balance was clearly missed in the last funding period of the ESF (2014 to 2020) with about two thirds of men supported compared to one third of women.
Our task is to work out which of these reasons lie within the system of the university and to develop recommendations for action on how the causes found can be reduced or changed within the universities or the programs.
On November 30, 2022, the final report with 54 recommendations for action was presented to the Saxon universities and the Saxon Ministry of Science and Culture (SMWK) in order to improve the conditions for a higher proportion of women in future ESF-funded projects and to remove possible barriers for women in accessing doctoral scholarships and junior research groups.
