The QueerPeer project addresses the growing discrimination and low visibility of LGBTQIA* students in Saxony’s higher education and social contexts, particularly in rural eastern Saxony. In terms of content, the project focuses on connecting queer students, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders from academia, business, and civil society in rural areas. Through participatory formats, areas where action is needed are identified, and measures are jointly developed to better address the lived realities of queer students. The project’s purpose is to strengthen universities as safe, inclusive spaces where LGBTQIA* students are visible, receive support, and can participate on an equal footing. At the same time, it aims to counteract the shortage of skilled workers and the outflow of young people from the region. The goal is to sustainably increase the visibility of queer students and give greater consideration to their interests, expand support structures, and establish a diversity-sensitive higher education and academic culture, particularly in rural Saxony. The project will result in a guide for action to promote equal opportunities for LGBTQIA* students within the academic system.

QueerPeer is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research’s (BMFTR) “Equal Opportunity and Diversity in Science and Research” program.
