Sustainability and Transformation Research
Our starting point is that global challenges and crises necessitate a profound transformation—across technological, social, and individual spheres—to foster sustainable development. In this context, "transformation" is understood as a global shift in economy and society toward sustainability.
This transformation encompasses not only technological innovations (a "technological fix") but also a wide range of social innovations, as well as new concepts for welfare and economic systems. Global economic cycles must be reshaped to ensure that planetary boundaries are respected, preventing the crossing of "tipping points" and the resulting irreversible damage (such as that which would occur if the 2°C climate target were exceeded). This transition—which is both necessary and urgent—requires overcoming various barriers and path dependencies, while simultaneously accelerating the shift. Beyond theoretical exploration, the subject also demands concrete applications and projects, which are supported by TRAWOS.
TRAWOS engages with this field through initiatives such as regional projects focused on structural change in the Lusatia (Lausitz) region or regional climate protection efforts (see also: social innovations). TRAWOS members provide guidance and coaching to regional businesses—for instance, within the Upper Lusatia Energy Efficiency Network—and work on specific projects, such as sustainability assessments for products or the development of environmental management strategies. Furthermore, in collaboration with various partners, the institute designs and hosts events that support—and, wherever possible, advance—social innovation and regional transformation. Additionally, the institute’s staff contribute to theoretical research and publications centered on sustainability and innovation.
