Who has taken the most steps?

In the pedometer challenge 2021, 22 teams of two count 5,891,748 steps together in one week.

Opinions differ on how many steps a day are healthy. However, everyone agrees on one thing: exercise - especially as a balance to everyday office life - is good for physical and mental health.

With this in mind, as part of the annual Health and Environment Days, teams from Zittau City Council, the Rectorate of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, the mayors of Zittau and Görlitz and HSZG students set out to count their steps for a week in a friendly competition. Together, the teams walked over 5 million steps.

Who will outrun everyone?

The staff of the Zittau city administration were able to defend their victory from 2020, winning the staff ranking and taking the hotly contested winner's trophy in the form of a foot back to the town hall. The Rectorate-Mayor ranking, which was introduced last year and in which Rector Prof. Dr. Alexander Kratzsch, Chancellor Karin Hollstein, Lord Mayor Octavian Ursu and Lord Mayor Thomas Zenker competed with their teams (Jenny König, Sebastian Riedel, Juliane Zachmann and Anke Zenker-Hoffmann), was won by the HSZG Rectorate this year. First place in the student competition went to Eileen Stübke and Clara Nickel from the Faculty of Social Sciences.

"We really enjoyed all the exercise, the fresh air and the intensive contact," says one participant from the HSZG. "Above all, we have made plans for more active lunch breaks in the future," she sums up. The fire department team, which competed on behalf of the Zittau city council, was equally enthusiastic about the event.

"It was a great campaign and we were able to experience things together that we wouldn't have experienced without this challenge! Thanks again for that." Fire department of the city administration of Zittau
